ABBOTSFORD — AbbyPD officers have removed a young driver from the streets after speeding and trying to run away from police Friday (Oct. 17).

At around 5 p.m., members of the Gang Crime Unit (GCU) were patrolling in west Abbotsford when they clocked a blue Tesla travelling at 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, according to a social media post by the police department.

Videos circulating on social media show the driver backing up and fleeing at excessive speeds when police tried to conduct the traffic stop near the intersection of Blue Jay Street and Blueridge Drive.

GCU members later found the car and apprehended the youth driver.

“Reckless driving and failing to stop for police are serious offences that will not be tolerated in our community,” said AbbyPD. “Our officers continue to take a zero-tolerance approach toward youth engaging in these dangerous behaviours.”

The youth faces charges of excessive speed, driving without due care and failing to stop for police. They also received an 18-month driving suspension, and the Tesla has been seized as offence-related property pending forfeiture proceedings.
