UPDATE 2:35 P.M. WEDNESDAY: Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Wade Meeres says 42 firefighters responded to today’s structure fire in the 4100 block of Wilson Road in Yarrow. On arrival, crews witnessed heavy smoke and fire emanating from two detached structures at the rear of a rural property. Firefighters initiated a defensive attack, successfully containing and extinguishing the blaze while preventing damage to the nearby residence. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department in conjunction with the RCMP.

Original story:

CHILLIWACK — At least eight Chilliwack Fire Dept. engines were paged for a massive inferno on Wilson Road Wednesday morning, a blaze that was later upgraded to a second alarm.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack’s duty chief, Engines 1, 3 and 4, and Ladder 4 were paged at 9:31 a.m. for a report of a barn fire in the 4100 block of Wilson Road, south of Yarrow Central Road.

A second alarm was activated not long after to include Rescue 1, Air Support 4, and Engines 1-3, 4-2 and 6.

Scanner traffic indicated the fire may have been due to a grow op. Of note, Chilliwack RCMP have not confirmed this information.

RCMP and fire crews have blocked off Wilson Road due to the towering blaze. Loud booms could be heard emanating from the colossal fire, which produced smoke visible from several kilometers away.

Thick columns of dark grey smoke billowed into the skies above Yarrow and near Majuba Hill.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill tells Fraser Valley Today at 11:03 a.m.: “We do have a few members there at Fire Department’s request for crowd and traffic control. According to our file it says attached house is empty.”

An excavator should arrive within an hour, according to scanner traffic at 12:15 p.m., and there is still no standby crew for B.C. EHS paramedics, firefighters learned from dispatch.
