CHILLIWACK — RCMP in Chilliwack and Hope are shining a purple light on domestic violence (DV) next week with an annual ceremony across both detachments.

Purple Light Nights is a community-sponsored campaign that began in Washington in 2007 to raise awareness of intimate partner violence, as well as its effects on children and families.

“Domestic Violence is a social issue that can affect anyone regardless of their age, sexual orientation, economic background, or race,” said Cpl. Jackie Remple of the Chilliwack RCMP Domestic Violence Unit. “It not only affects the victims, but also affects the children in the home, family members, and sometimes even pets.”

Life-sized silhouettes of “Silent Witnesses” will also be placed throughout the City of Chilliwack and the Districts of Kent and Hope, representing women, men and children who “no longer have a voice” as a result of their deaths from acts of DV.

Chilliwack RCMP responds to approximately 50,000 calls for service every year. Nearly 1475 of those reports are related to domestic violence.

“Even one incident of domestic violence is too many and we must work together to change this,” added Remple.

The Chilliwack ceremony is set to start 7 p.m. at the local detachment, while Hope’s ceremony begins 6 p.m. at Memorial Park. Both lighting ceremonies will be held Wednesday, October 1, to mark the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
