ABBOTSFORD — Drivers travelling on Clearbrook and Marshall Road may have caught glimpse of a large police presence after a woman was assaulted at a nearby encampment earlier this week.

On Tuesday (Sep. 23) at around 3:50 p.m., an unknown motorist flagged down an AbbyPD patrol officer to report the incident.

The male suspect was non-compliant, prompting the officer to request backup from other officers in the area.

Witnesses on social media described seeing between eight and nearly a dozen police cars at an encampment near the giant raspberries statue that afternoon.

“Officers were immediately dispatched to the area and quickly located the suspect,” said Sgt. Paul Walker with the Abbotsford Police Department.

“The man was non-compliant with police commands, prompting the deployment of a less-lethal shotgun to gain compliance.”

He was taken into custody without further incident, while the victim was identified and uninjured.

She had decided not to press charges, and the suspect has been released as a result.
