ABBOTSFORD — Getting treated may not be so daunting for some patients anymore after an Abbotsford hospital’s latest round of major equipment renovations.

A roughly $7.5 million project is now underway at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre to replace aging equipment in its interventional radiology suite – an area where medical imaging teams use X-ray technology to treat a range of conditions, from vascular to gynecologic, all without the use of needles and wires.

“These equipment upgrades will improve access to care for patients in the Fraser Valley,” said Minister of Infrastructure Bowinn Ma. “But this is more than just new equipment — by providing patients with advanced procedures and better care, it’s a major step forward in building the health-care infrastructure our communities need.”

Interventional radiology reportedly provides less discomfort and pain compared to open surgery, cutting down on patient risks and improving recovery times.

“This enhancement strengthens access to advanced medical procedures and expands our ability to meet the evolving needs of the individuals and families we support,” said Kevin Enns, executive director for medical imaging with Fraser Health.

The province invested $3.9 million into the project, with Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation sharing the latter cost.

Fraser Health continues to expand its scope of services at Abbotsford Regional, increasing access to more complex non-invasive treatments like tumour ablation for cancer treatment and vascular interventions like angioplasty and stenting.

Upgrades are expected to be complete in early 2026.
