Abbotsford technicians amp up fight for equal pay with new video campaign

ABBOTSFORD — Local Rogers technicians are turning up the dial on their voices with a new video campaign by United Steelworkers Union (USW) Local 1944.

“Equal pay for equal work. That’s what this fight is about,” said Michael Phillips, USW Local 1944 President.

“Rogers is a multi-billion-dollar corporation. There’s no justification for paying Abbotsford workers less than their colleagues just a few kilometres away.”

The video shows a group of Abbotsford technicians who have been “bullied, ignored and forced into striking” when all they’ve asked is to be paid the same as their counterparts in larger cities like Vancouver and Langley.

It has received 336,030 views at the time of writing.

“We’ve been clear with Rogers that the only path to resolving this strike is a fair deal that ends Abbotsford’s second-class treatment,” said Phillips. “Our members’ resilience has carried them this far and community support continues to grow stronger every day.”

Rogers rejected the union’s proposal for an aligned contract at the last bargaining session on September 15 and responded with a “disrespectful” counteroffer.

Negotiations are set to resume on Monday, September 22.
