FRASER VALLEY — Mounties in Langley say an impaired driver has received over $10,000 in penalties after a Langley RCMP officer conducting laser speed enforcement was nearly struck by the responsible vehicle on Monday.

According to a statement from Langley RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom, a Langley RCMP officer who had been doing speed enforcement at Robertson Crescent and 242 Street was almost hit by a car as he was attempting to pull it over.

The driver who was clocked at 93 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone initially slowed when flagged, but subsequently tried to evade police. While the driver could have moved to side of the road safely, the motorist instead swerved off the roadway to the right of the officer and accelerated to well over 100 km/h.

Police say another officer who saw the dangerous maneuver was able to intercept the vehicle before the motorist could reach their home. The driver allegedly displayed signs of impaired and failed two roadside screening tests.

Police say the driver received the following penalties:

  • A 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP)
  • A 30-day vehicle impound
  • 11 charges under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act, totaling $2,035 in fines
  • $8,225 in driver penalty Points

“This incident highlights the very real dangers impaired and reckless drivers pose, not only to the public, but to police officers doing their jobs roadside,” said Sgt. Sharoom. “If you choose to drink and drive, you are not only risking lives, but you are setting yourself up to face serious financial and legal consequences.”

Langley RCMP officers are urging motorists to drive sober, obey posted speed limits, and always reduce speed when approaching roadside enforcement or emergency vehicles.
