CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP detachment has confirmed that a 50-year-old Chilliwack woman was arrested after the car she was driving allegedly struck a power pole on Yale Road Sunday night and fled the scene.

According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill, police were called to the 48200 block of Yale Road Sunday night for the report of a single-vehicle collision into a power pole.

The driver, a 50-year-old Chilliwack woman, was the lone occupant in the vehicle.

“Yes, she did try to flee after the collision and was followed by witnesses who were able to direct responding officers to where she was,” Sgt. Mulvihill said.

The female was arrested and after refusing to provide a breath sample, was charged with refusal under the provincial immediate roadside prohibition process.

Sgt. Mulvihill says she did not have a history of impaired driving.

BC Hydro and a flagging crew attended the scene and power was eventually restored.

Approximately 1,510 customers lost power after the vehicle struck a power pole, causing it to snap and lean at a 45-degree angle. Power was out for several hours Sunday night amid sweltering temperatures on Sunday.
