CHILLIWACK — A public hearing will be held in less than two weeks to rezone five properties on Wellington Avenue near downtown Chilliwack to facilitate a six-storey housing development.

Chilliwack councillors gave first and second reading at its meeting Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 19) to an application from Whitetail Homes Ltd. to rezone five properties toward an eventual goal of building a six-storey building featuring two parkade levels and five residential floors.

If the rezoning application and building permits are approved, the six-storey development will consist of 155 units, including 116 small-unit apartments; 180 off-street parking spaces of which 33 are visitor parking spaces; 201 bicycle parking spaces; a common amenity space of approximately 1,021m2 complete with a 925m2 outdoor space, along with outdoor dining tables seating areas, a BBQ/sink, children’s playground and dog run area.

The five properties are located at 45768, 45778, 45784, 45788, and 45798 Wellington Avenue, near the intersection of Wellington Avenue/Mary Street.

Orange demolition permit signs are currently visible on the site where two homes once sat.

Parts of the five properties are encircled by a blue construction fence.

One of the five properties whose home was recently demolished was 45784 Wellington Avenue. It was purchased in February 2024 for $1,050,000, according to public records available on the B.C. Assessment website.
