[VIDEO] Langley fire crews respond to large apartment blaze Sunday morning

LANGLEY — The Langley Fire Department had an early, explosive start to the morning after a downtown apartment site set ablaze Sunday (Aug. 17).

At around 4:13 a.m., RCMP and multiple fire engines responded to the scene of a condo building under construction in the 20100 block of Fraser Highway after 4:15 a.m.

“Out of an abundance of caution, several neighbouring residential buildings were evacuated,” said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP. “We are working with the Langley City Fire Rescue on this incident and the investigation into the cause of this fire is on-going.”

Nearby residents reported a large boom, followed by debris sparking off for more than 200 metres away from the six-storey site.

Crews were reportedly still on-site as of 10:30 a.m.

The Emilio Finatti Pizzeria, located right next to the site, has been closed until further notice due to the incident.

“Early this morning, our Langley location encountered an unexpected challenge with a fire in the adjacent building. We are incredibly grateful for the quick response and support from the Langley City Fire Department during this situation,” the restaurant wrote.

There are no reported injuries at this time, and road closures are currently in effect in the area. The public is asked to avoid the scene until further notice.

Residents note that the largely wooden construction site has been under development for several years. The condo initially had an expected completion date of summer 2024, but has since been pushed back to April 2026.
