CHILLIWACK — The owner of a zero waste specialty grocery store in Sardis has announced its upcoming closure.

Owner Salina Derish announced in a Facebook video on Wednesday, August 6 that PickEco Refills at 100-5580 Vedder Road will close in either the beginning of September or by the end of September.

“I wanted to come here and tell you guys some very important news, and that is that our Sardis store is going to be closing. I don’t know the exact date, it will most definitely be the end of September,” Derish said in her video. “If things go smoothly, it may be closer to the beginning of September for people to be able to shop here in store.”

PickEco’s other location in District 1881 will remain open. In the meantime, Derish encouraged the public to come in as soon as possible as she will be moving some inventory over to the PickEco apothecary at 105-45922 Thunderbird Lane in District 1881. Some items will be on sale at the Vedder Road location.

“Get here in the next four weeks. Food all needs to go,” said Derish, who said the company’s days of selling food are over for now. She said she might look at an option of some kind of bulk buy or delivery service.

“For now, I just have like this monumental task of selling or moving everything in this space in the next month and a bit,” Derish said in her video dated August 6. “So, lots of things for sale. Lots of food for sale, lots of equipment.”

Derish said the hardest part about the closure involves letting go of her staff.

“Please know that when you come in here, there are going to be staff that are getting laid off, which is the worst part of all of this,” Derish said. “Just know that when you’re coming in here and if you’re feeling frustrated (e.g., trying to find things or asking staff questions), there are people who are losing their jobs, so please be mindful and respectful. Please treat them with the utmost respect.”

Derish added, “”It’s been a long ride. This store has been open for over seven years between the downtown Mill Street location and this location. This is a little bit surreal for me because this has become a part of who I am.”
