HOPE — A small fire that ignited in early July near Highway 1 in Hope and intensified to the point that it was upgraded to an out of control fire last week is now being held.

The 1.5-hectare fire, located on Serpent’s Back Trail south of Highway 1 in Hope, has been reclassified by the B.C. Wildfire Service as being held due to decreased fire behaviour and the hard work of ground crews, heavy equipment operators and aviation resources, BCWS wrote on its website.

Fire behaviour is now considered low; a smouldering ground fire with no open flame.

During active periods, smoke from the fire had been visible in Hope and from Highway 1.

Crews continue to build containment by removing fuel and laying hose. Bucketing helicopters have been utilized to cool any hot spots along the East flank, which is inaccessible for ground crews.

Meanwhile, danger tree fallers are supporting crews to gain safe access on steep and challenging terrain. Falling debris has created some activity further downslope – the Hope Fire Department is assisting crews, running a sprinkler system at the bottom of the slope and dousing any hotspots.
