Lytton-area fire measured at 460ha as smoke clears

LYTTON, B.C. — The reported size of a wildfire burning near Lytton has tripled, but the BC Wildfire Service says the new figure can be attributed to more accurate mapping.

The service has now mapped the Cantilever Bar wildfire 10 kilometres south of Lytton at 460 hectares, saying smoke cleared Tuesday (July 29), allowing for a better look from the sky.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon on the west bank of the Fraser River, adjacent to a rail right-of-way. It can be easily seen by people travelling along the Trans Canada Highway.

There are 45 firefighters on site along with structure protection teams working to protect properties and douse the flames.

Lytton First Nation, Skuppah First Nation and Siska First Nation all have evacuation alerts in place, as well as the Thompson Nicola Regional District.
