CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack firefighters have had a busy and stressful few months so far, which makes one team member’s departure all the more earned.

Captain Douglas Lock began his fire service journey in 2002 as a Paid-On-Call (POC) firefighter at Hall 1.

“I really enjoyed it, it felt like it was something I was meant to do. I like problem-solving and the mechanical aspect,” said Lock.

Lock then steadily moved up the ranks over time – from a career firefighter in 2008, to Lieutenant in 2020, and finally to Captain the following year.

He was crucial to developing new tactics for the constantly evolving Chilliwack Fire Department, utilizing his experience in moving up from POC to encourage new firefighters. He also received a Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General in 2024.

“Keep learning, take everyone’s input and build on it… Never stop learning, never stop working, never stop trying and take care of mental health,” he told colleagues.

As much as he’ll miss the public appreciation, camaraderie and daily life at the firehall, Lock is now looking forward to spending more time with his family. He noted that the department is currently in a good place with opportunities for growth and potential.

“Captain Lock, we thank you for your years of dedication, leadership, and your quiet strength,” wrote the fire department in a social media post. “Your legacy of mentorship and service will continue to inspire those you’ve worked alongside.”

“We hope every member of our team considers his compassionate spirit and tries to emulate it in all they do.”
