Original story below:

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack firefighters were dispatched for a possible fire near Chilliwack Mountain Monday night, only to find out the fire appeared near Deroche, northwest of Chilliwack and north of the Fraser River.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack fire crews from Engine 1 (Cheam Avenue firehall) were paged shortly before 10 p.m. about a possible fire on Chilliwack Mountain. As firefighters drove in and around Chilliwack Mountain, they notified emergency dispatch at about 10:06 p.m. that they observed a noticeable glow in the area of Nicomen Mountain near Deroche.

Firefighters asked that Coastal Fire Centre personnel be notified about the fire.

Not long after, B.C. Wildfire Service’s website revealed the fire was 0.009 hectares in size, and was located near Norrish Creek.

The suspected cause is under investigation, though BCWS cautions that wildfire investigations often take time and can be very complex.

Lightning strikes were present in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and the surrounding Fraser Valley last night before the wildfire ignited. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Monday night for the Abbotsford area, but was later canceled.
