ABBOTSFORD — A long-time volunteer has recently been recognized for her impact on the Special Olympics movement in B.C.

For over two decades, Abbotsford resident Donna Bilous dedicated her time to Special Olympics BC (SOBC) through program operations, advocacy and leadership for inclusion and social change.

Now, she joins Cranbrook athlete Erin Thom in the organization’s Hall of Fame as a Provincial Builder.

“I have been given so many opportunities to grow as a coach, a person, and as a parent of an accomplished athlete,” said Bilous. “I hope my involvement and passion for Special Olympics BC has impacted those that matter most, and that is the athletes, coaches and volunteers of our organization.”

“The Special Olympics movement in our province is so fortunate to be enriched by the involvement of Erin Thom and Donna Bilous.Their incredible skills have inspired countless others, and their leadership and example have made a lasting difference,” said SOBC President Dan Howe.

In addition to her SOBC duties, Bilous is a well-known speed skating coach and official, leading teams to great success from provincial to world championships. She also coaches multiple sports in her local SOBC.

Her daughter, Paige Norton, is an accomplished speed skater and female powerlifter for the Special Olympics.

SOBC awarded the new inductees at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Games on July 12.

July 14 to 20 marks the annual Special Olympics Global Week of Inclusion, a time when people are encouraged to come together to include and respect individuals with intellectual disabilities.
