Staff member assaulted at Kent Institution in Agassiz

AGASSIZ — A staff member at Kent Institution was assaulted Monday (Jul. 14), prompting an investigation by RCMP and the Correctional Service Canada.

A Correctional Service Canada news release states the staff member was evaluated and treated following the assault. The nature and extent of the injuries were not released, however the staff member was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The alleged assailant has been identified and authorities say appropriate action will be taken.

The Agassiz RCMP detachment is working with prison officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault that occurred within the walls of the maximum security prison.

Prison officials say a review of the incident will be conducted in an effort to improve practices and prevent similar events in the future.
