ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Board of Education has now named a new leader to guide the district’s 46 schools.

After more than 25 years of experience in public education in B.C., Dr. Nathan Ngieng has been appointed Superintendent of Schools, effective Tuesday, July 15.

“Since his early days in Abbotsford, Dr. Ngieng has demonstrated a deep understanding of the needs of our district and a steadfast commitment to inclusive and innovative education,” said Shirley Wilson, chair of the Board. “His leadership, integrity, and vision for public education will continue to serve our students, staff, and community well.”

He originally joined the school district in August 2017 as Director of Learning Support Services, before moving on to serve as Assistant Superintendent in 2021 and as Deputy Superintendent in July 2023.

That same year, he completed his Doctor of Education at Western University– adding to his credentials, which already included a Master of Education, a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Human Kinetics.

“I’m honoured to step into this role and excited to continue working alongside our students, families, and the outstanding team of staff in Abbotsford,” said Dr. Ngieng. “Together, we will build on the district’s strong foundation to create inclusive, engaging learning experiences that help every learner thrive.”

Over 20,000 students are attending Abbotsford schools. The district also employs nearly 3,000 full-time and part-time employees, making it the largest employer in the city.
