ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Police Department is investigating a significant incident of retail theft at Highstreet Mall.

According to a weekend recap of police activity, AbbyPD says its patrol officers were dispatched for a theft report at a clothing retailer at the west Abbotsford shopping centre on Friday evening, July 4 at approximately 7:20 p.m. The stolen merchandise was valued at over $14,000 from a retailer within the complex.

The store’s loss prevention officer reported that a male suspect entered the premises carrying a large duffle bag and proceeded to fill it with merchandise from multiple clothing racks, Sgt. Walker said. The suspect then fled through the main entrance.

“I would characterize this as a grab and run style theft,” he said.

The investigation is ongoing.

The incident was one of 316 police files over the weekend, across a broad spectrum of incidents that included 15 domestic disputes, five assaults, four missing person reports, three break and enters, 20 thefts, and eight collisions.

Proactive traffic enforcement efforts led to four impaired drivers being removed from the roads, and 19 violation tickets being issued.

Police also say that by the end of the weekend, three individuals were held in custody, pending court appearances or transfer to the Surrey pretrial facility by the Sheriff’s Service.
