CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack School District teacher has been reprimanded for professional misconduct in the classroom during the 2022-23 school year.

According to a text of a consent agreement from the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, Robert Luke Acheson was employed as an inclusion teacher for SD33 at a secondary school in Chilliwack. Acheson is the former head varsity football coach at G.W. Graham, though the name of the school is not listed in the consent agreement.

During the 2022-23 school year, while working as an inclusion teacher with a caseload of students identified as vulnerable, Acheson made comments to students, on several occasions, to students, including one student in particular known as “Student A”, about their physical appearance.

On several occasions, Acheson made comments to students, including one student identified as “Student A”, about the physical appearance of a staff member at the school.

The consent agreement states Acheson shared an inappropriate story with students, including Student A, about a traumatic personal incident that transpired when he was in middle or high school, that contained inappropriate content of a sexual nature. Acheson also shared a personal story with students, including Student A, about a high school girlfriend that featured inappropriate content of a sexual nature.

On June 16, 2023, SD33 took action against Acheson by issuing a letter of discipline, suspending him 15 days without pay, directing him to complete a professional boundaries course and not allowing him to accept assignments that worked with vulnerable students, which involved positions as an inclusion teacher, pathways teacher or in the Alternate Education Program. The consent agreement indicates Acheson completed a course from the Justice Institute of BC entitled, “Respectful Professional Boundaries”, between August 9 and 11, 2023.

The consent agreement goes on to state Acheson failed to maintain appropriate professional boundaries in discussions with students, by sharing inappropriate stories that included inappropriate content of a sexual nature, and by inappropriately commenting on the appearance of students and other staff.

The consent agreement does not indicate whether Acheson is still employed with SD33.
