CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack fire crews were dispatched Monday evening for the report of an oil spill on South Sumas Road.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack Engine 4-2 and Air Support 4 were asked to attend South Sumas Road for the report of an oil spill on the road. The page came in at about 9:36 p.m. Monday night.

The incident occurred on South Sumas Road about 200 meters east of Unsworth Road.

Scanner traffic indicated the oil came from a tractor. Fire crews notified dispatch that the road was extremely slippery.

Firefighters radioed dispatch to ask that public works from the City of Chilliwack be notified about the spill.

As of 10:20 p.m., Chilliwack fire crews, public works personnel and a tow truck were on scene. There was single-lane alternating traffic through the area as of 10:20 p.m.

One nearby resident wrote on Facebook that he had a “huge pool” of oil under his hedge and running into his driveway.

“They applied absorb all. Swept up some of of it,” the man wrote on Facebook. “Pushed the rest into my garden and ditch. I asked the city worker last night what’s the plan for cleanup. He says, ‘Oh, not much. I’m gonna send a sweeper in the morning.’ No hazmat team and no containment booms.”
