CHILLIWACK — A restaurant in the Southgate Shopping Centre on Yale Road in Chilliwack has likely served its last order of pad thai and assorted Thai dishes.

The interior of the Thai Express restaurant at unit 41, 45906 Yale Road in Chilliwack, was covered by brown paper when a Fraser Valley Today reporter visited the premises this past Thursday, June 12. Its door was locked during normal daytime hours when other retail storefronts in the shopping centre were open.

A “notice of termination and notice to quit” from the commercial landlord appeared on the front door of the business this past week, indicating that tenants Kashvi Restaurants Inc., located at 3228 Cedar Drive in Port Coquitlam, had failed to fulfil its obligations under the lease “by reason of its failure to pay rent.”

“Take notice that the landlord terminates the lease effective immediately, pursuant to its rights under the lease,” the text of the notice of termination and notice to quit stated. “Also take notice that the landlord requires the tenant and any others in occupation of the premises to quit and deliver up vacant possession of the premises to the landlord immediately.”

DoorDash had a note on its website saying Thai Express was temporarily closed.

Fraser Valley Today tried to call the phone number, 604-391-1994, listed in a Google search for Thai Express, but could not reach anyone or leave a message. The recording said, “You have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”

Prior to its apparent closure, a male barber operating in Southgate not far from Thai Express told a Fraser Valley Today reporter that the business had been intermittently open in early May and did not have regular hours.

The lease between the tenants and the landlord appears to have been first signed in April 2023.
