Massive sinkhole just west of Chilliwack closes rural road

ABBOTSFORD — Sinkholes aren’t just limited to the Coquihalla Highway.

Abbotsford police say a sinkhole has been reported in the 5400 block of Tolmie Road, located about a kilometre west of the Keith Wilson Bridge.

Police say the road will be closed between the 5400 block of Tolmie Road and No. 2 Road to allow for necessary repairs.

A picture taken by AbbyPD shows a sinkhole of at least two feet in diameter.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Late last week, a sinkhole closed the Coquihalla Highway northbound between Hope and Merritt Thursday night and most of Friday, before highway crews closed it in both directions late Friday and night and most of Saturday, before reopening fully in both directions.
