Fire in Squamish nearly triples in size from Monday to Tuesday

UPDATE: The fire in Squamish has grown from five hectares on Monday to 14.4 hectares as of Tuesday evening, according to the latest information on the BC Wildfire Service dashboard.

SQUAMISH — An evacuation alert has been issued for 16 properties within the District of Squamish amid a fast-growing fire that is currently five hectares Tuesday morning (June 10).

Similarly, the District of Squamish has declared a state of local emergency due to an active wildfire located east of Highway 99 between Dowad Drive and Depot Road. The district says the wildfire poses an existing or imminent threat to people and property within the areas known as Brackendale, Tantalus Road and Skyridge.

The fire was discovered on Monday, June 9. There are three helicopters assigned to fight the fire, along with one initial attack and a unit crew.

BC Wildfire Service says the five-hectare fire is deemed out of control.

According to the municipality, BC Wildfire Service crews have also identified that some people are accessing the trails around the fire. The district is reminding people to stay away from the area to allow the crews to do their work.

Out of an abundance of caution, BC Wildfire Service has requested that the District of Squamish issue evacuation alerts to properties at the east end of Depot Road, east of Highway 99 including the campground, and at the end of Tantalus Road.

The district says this is not a requirement to evacuate, but notice that evacuation may be required. If an evacuation order is issued overnight, officials would go door to door to these properties to require individuals to evacuate. There are 16 properties
