ABBOTSFORD — There are too many commercial vehicles in the Fraser Valley that fail to comply with provincial safety regulations, endangering the motorists around them.

Case in point last week, the Abbotsford Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit partnered with the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) team to conduct a commercial vehicle enforcement blitz in Abbotsford. Police say these large-scale operations play a critical role in promoting road safety and ensuring commercial vehicles meet regulatory standards. During the blitz, officers identified 104 violations, resulting in 11 vehicles being taken out of service.

In a video discussing the enforcement blitz, AbbyPD Constable Rob Dyck said, “We’re here today along Marshall Road and Winther doing commercial vehicle checks in partnership with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement.”

Constable Dyck continued, “The importance of doing these checks is that when other motorists are out on the road, they’re not getting hit by potential insecure cargo along with other equipment, and that the trucks are in working condition, and keeping our motorists safe.”

Officer Dyck says police and CVSE personnel often locate a number of violations.

“So, one of many things that we find deficient in these commercial trucks, or dump trucks, is that we’ll find loose cargo where they don’t have the cargo strapped,” Officer Dyck said. “There will be gravel on other parts of the truck that fall off and can bounce and hit cars or the windshield or radiators. We find tires that are worn down past the wear marks. Sometimes it’s all the way down to the steel graded cords.”

AbbyPD says road safety remains a priority for all types of vehicles.

“Our officers will continue proactive enforcement efforts across the city to help keep our roads safe for everyone,” the department wrote in a social media post.
