POPKUM — One person is in critical condition and two others are in hospital after a gas station blaze in Popkum, roughly 15 minutes east of Chilliwack, early Saturday afternoon (Jun. 7).

According to Doug Warnke, a member of a radio scanning group in Chilliwack, the Popkum Fire Department responded to a motorhome fire in Bridal Falls just before noon today. The flames quickly spread to the Shell gas station, and units from Chilliwack and Agassiz were paged for assistance shortly after, followed by requests for RCMP, BC Hydro and Fortis.

“The Chilliwack Fire Department was requested to provide mutual aid support for a motorhome fire that had extended to a fuel station,” wrote Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar. “Firefighters from Hall 2 responded to assist the Popkum Fire Department.
There were no reported injuries to Chilliwack Fire Department personnel.”

Crews managed to control the fire within the hour, but a witness at the scene reported that the gas station is now a loss, with an adjacent restaurant being heavily damaged.

“Paramedics on the scanner said there were three patients earlier, unsure if there were more, one was being rushed to Abby Airport by ground to meet the air ambulance,” said David Seltenrich.

BCEHS has confirmed that they responded with three primary care paramedics, one advanced care paramedic and a critical care helicopter.

“Paramedics transported one patient by helicopter to hospital in critical condition and two patients via ground, both in a stable condition,” a spokesperson told Fraser Valley Today.

The fire is now under investigation by the Popkum Fire Department.
