Valley Huskers need just a few more billets ahead of 2025 season

CHILLIWACK — The Valley Huskers hope to find just a few more willing hosts in Chilliwack to accommodate young men who are living their dream of playing in the Canadian Junior Football League.

As the team prepares for its first game next month, the team is just a few host families short of its goal of housing all of its out-of-town players.

As the mother of two young boys, Chilliwack resident Brenna Ruetz knows first-hand the positive impact that being a billet can offer. She has no regrets whatsoever about opening her home to players who just require a temporary home while they play football in Chilliwack.

“These kids are so worth the investment in their future. They just need a little love and support when their own families can’t be here to help see them through their journey in their pursuit of their dreams,” Ruetz told Fraser Valley Today. “The added bonus of billet passes for their family to all home games this season.”

Families who host the players are compensated $800/month for about 4-5 months. The players just need a private room and access to groceries to ensure nutritious food is available each day. Billet families receive support and guidance from the Valley Huskers coaching staff, billet coordinators and the organization throughout the season.

Notably, host families are asked to include the player in their regular family life, including events, day trips and meals. The team says many players and families build a relationship and positive connection on and off the field, often beyond their football career.

“Having them in our home as role models and examples of where hard work and discipline can get them has been great for our boys,” Ruetz said.
