CHILLIWACK — A church in Sardis will mark the 100th anniversary of its denominational founding next week with bell ringing and refreshments for anyone who would like to mark the occasion.

Carman United Church on Vedder Road in Sardis will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada on Tuesday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at 7258 Vedder Road.

It marks the day when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Church denominations merged to form the United Church of Canada.

Parishioners and well-wishers will gather at the church’s bell tower where it will be rung 100 times by church members. They did something similar a decade ago when it the bell was rung 90 times back in 2015.

A short program will also be held and a centennial cake will be cut and shared along with coffee and tea.

You can find Carman United Church on Facebook. It meets weekly on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m., and is led, in part, by Rev. Kirstin Autio, who grew up in Abbotsford and has been serving at Carman United since September 2019. She has a master’s of divinity from the Vancouver School of Theology.
