MISSION — The B.C. government has broken ground to build more housing for Indigenous, low-income people in Mission.

BC Housing has partnered with the Kwantlen First Nation to construct an affordable, 65-unit building along a forested hillside by the Stave River, at 10221 Wilson St. Prospective residents can choose between 12 one-bedroom or 32 two-bedroom units.

“By partnering with First Nations, we can make a real difference to help more Indigenous people live in affordable homes where they feel culturally safe and supported,” said Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs Ravi Kahlon. “This is another example of how we’re taking action to help more people build a stronger future for themselves and their family in the community they love.”

Families can also rest easy at one of 18 three-bedroom units, as well as send any young kids to schools located a short drive away.

“This Indigenous-led housing project is a wonderful example of the type of partnerships we need to create new homes and make a real difference in the quality and sense of community in people’s lives,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.

The Kwantlen First Nation Affordable Housing Society will own and operate the building. The province provided $19 million to construct these homes, and the Kwantlen First Nation provided land valued at $3.6 million.
