Demand for period products grows over 7 million in Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland
FRASER VALLEY — As the need for products grows to millions across British Columbia, an annual campaign to combat period poverty is renewing its call ahead of Menstrual Health Day on May 28.
United Way BC, in partnership with CUPE Local 1816, hopes to collect over 550,000 period products as part of its Period Promise fundraiser. The organization’s needs assessment survey showed nearly 7,650,000 products are needed in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland this year– for a total of 14 million products all over B.C.
“For many who struggle to afford basic necessities, menstrual products can become an unmanageable monthly expense,” said Julie Van Eesteren, Children’s Services manager for Sea to Sky Community Services.
“By providing sustainable, long-lasting alternatives like menstrual cups, and period underwear, you help ensure that no one has to choose between food and hygiene or miss out on school or work due to lack of supplies.”
