SUMAS, WASHINGTON — A Canadian citizen has been arrested by American border guards from the Blaine Sector division in Sumas after he tried to cross from the Fraser Valley into the U.S. illegally with narcotics on him.

According to a brief social media post from Rosario Pete Vasquez, chief patrol agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol agents from the Port of Sumas apprehended Richard Kari Clayton, a citizen of Canada, after he tried to sneak into the U.S. illegally on a bike.

Clayton also had methamphetamines and cocaine on him.

Border officials say Clayton, who has a date of birth in 1969, has since been returned to Canada.

There may be a reason Clayton tried to access the U.S. on a bike. A man with the full name of Richard Karl Clayton, which differs by one letter, has an extensive rap sheet in the CSO online database for offences committed in British Columbia. A man with that last name had a charge of driving while prohibited/suspended license from July 2024 in Popkum, east of Chilliwack.

CSO records note that a Richard Kari Clayton had an alias/previous name of Richard Karl Clayton.

Clayton faced previous charges of driving while prohibited/license suspended in September 2024 from an incident in Abbotsford.
