Local restaurant owner honours late son with Mother’s Day lunch initiative for unhoused

CHILLIWACK — A beloved Chilliwack restaurant is seeking help with a new Mother’s Day initiative in honour of the owner’s late son.

Grammy’s Place will assemble 75 bagged lunches for the unhoused, and Eva Myhre, or Grammy, will need some help with the project.

“If we have lots of people who can come in and grab them and take them out, that would be amazing,” Grammy told Fraser Valley Today. “My staff is going to come in on their own time and help me put them all together before we start.”

Anyone willing to help will receive a 5% off coupon. Handouts can start anytime after the restaurant opens at 8 a.m.

“We feed the dishomed on a regular basis,” she said. “I was actually very surprised at the reception that this is getting. I thought I was going to have to go hand them all out myself, so this is amazing.”

Labour of grief and love

It’s a warm community service that all started from a tragic event. The initial Facebook announcement revealed why Mother’s Day may feel more solemn at Grammy’s Place this year.

“Most of you know that this Sunday will be a difficult day for me. For those who are not in the know, this will be my first Mother’s Day without my youngest son, Noah,” wrote Myhre. “Although Noah himself was not dishomed, he struggled with many of the same demons.”

Grammy’s son, 26-year-old Noah Myhre, passed due to an overdose in the early morning of November 22, 2024.

“Many have plans other than eating at Grammy’s this Sunday, but all are welcome to stop in and grab a few lunches and a coupon for a later date. I have so much hope left to give. Please help me share it with those who need it,” the post added.

This initiative may turn into an annual, maybe monthly, affair. After all, Myhre aims to continue building an all-inclusive, safe place in her family’s own corner of downtown Chilliwack.

“Once you come in, you’re my family, and you’re a guest […] My grandson actually at eight years old summed it up- Grammy’s Place helps.”

Grammy’s Place is located at 45866 Alexander Avenue. The cafe-style restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
