Chilliwack man, 28, fatally struck by train near Young Road rail crossing

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack first responders were dispatched to the Young Road rail crossing Wednesday morning after a 28-year-old man was fatally struck by a train.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack Fire, Chilliwack RCMP and B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics were paged for the report of a patient under a train at about 8:45 a.m.

First responders radioed dispatch to say the patient was in traumatic arrest.

A helicopter was initially slated to land at Chilliwack Airport at 9:25 a.m., but it was later canceled. First responders radioed dispatch to say no further assistance was needed.

Young Road was closed in both northbound and southbound directions due to the incident.

Young Road at the rail crossing was closed for several hours due to the fatality, but has since reopened.

Chilliwack RCMP released a brief statement at 9:31 a.m.: “Chilliwack RCMP are responding to a fatal collision involving a train and a pedestrian. Young Road is currently closed between Chilliwack Central Road and Alexander Ave. Please use alternate route. More information will be released once available.”

Chilliwack RCMP released a second statement at 11:52 a.m. Wednesday morning that confirmed the victim was a 28-year-old Chilliwack man.
