CHILLIWACK — As Chilliwack grows to well over 100,000 people and becomes more diverse, the City of Chilliwack plans to accommodate growing demand for multi-use parks that meet the needs of various sporting enthusiasts.

To that end, the City of Chilliwack is currently incorporating an artificial turf cricket pitch area into Rosedale Park, 51535 Yale Road, and ball netting along part of the park’s north edge.

A city spokesperson told Fraser Valley Today in an email that cricket has become more popular in Chilliwack recently, and staff have explored ways to introduce this activity into existing park spaces.

“The Rosedale sports field is being updated to incorporate cricket into the many available activities at that park, including youth ball games, special events, picnics and more,” spokesperson Jamie Leggatt said. “By creating spaces that can be used for multiple purposes, we are maximizing our available inventory for the entire community.”

Interest in cricket is extremely popular in countries like India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan but has a following in other parts of the world like Australia and the United Kingdom. Cricket is a bat and ball contest played between two teams of 11 players on a cricket field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long cricket pitch.
