Therapeutic concert series hits high note with Mission long-term care residents

MISSION — Older adults at The Residence in Mission (TRIM) can now enjoy the healing power of live music through a foundation-funded concert series program.

“Live music, in particular, can stimulate the brain, evoke heartwarming memories, and provide a powerful outlet for self-expression,” wrote Dr. Lakhbir Jassal with the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF). “By diverting attention away from pain and discomfort, music can also help ease pain and lessen anxiety.”

Studies have shown that music therapy can have positive effects on cognitive function, reduce stress and enhance emotional well-being, especially in seniors.

“We are thrilled to partner with TRIM to bring the joy and therapeutic benefits of live music to the residents-in-care. This program will have a positive impact on overall well-being and health,” says FVHCF Executive Director Liz Harris.

TRIM joins a growing number of Fraser Health long-term care facilities with music therapy programs. In September 2024, Chilliwack’s Heritage Village received music equipment donations, and music lessons and instruments continue to be part of the Foundation’s Psychosis Intervention Wish List.
