Mounties urge road users to stay safe ahead of spring break

CHILLIWACK — RCMP in the Upper Fraser Regional Detachment is issuing a safety reminder to all road users– drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists– as spring break rolls in with warmer weather.

Mounties say recent pedestrian deaths have highlighted the importance of caution on local roads.

“These recent incidents serve as a tragic reminder of how quickly lives can change,” said Inspector Jeff Bowerman, Interim Officer in Charge. “With increased travel and activity on our roads, it’s more important for all road users to stay alert, follow the rules, and look out for one another.”

Officers will stay proactive in road safety enforcement, as well as working to raise public awareness by engaging with communities, sharing safety tips, and promoting responsible road use.

Drivers are asked to slow down, avoid distractions, and yield to pedestrians, while cyclists are required to follow traffic laws and signal correctly. Pedestrians need to be visible and cross at designated areas when it is safe to do so.

“Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone,” added Inspector Bowerman.

More information on road safety is available on the RCMP’s website.

The last month saw three fatalities, including a three-year-old, in Chilliwack alone. In Abbotsford, a pedestrian was critically injured after a crash on Sunday (Mar. 9),  and one person died exactly one month prior when a pickup truck crashed into a power pole.
