REMAINS FOUND

Mission teen found deceased after more than 17-year search

MISSION — Jeff Surtel’s family had been searching for him since he was last seen leaving his Mission home on a bike around midnight nearly 18 years ago.

On Thursday (Mar. 6), his father was finally able to share an update– albeit not a happy one.

“Remains have been identified through DNA testing as belonging to our beloved son Jeff,” wrote Gary Surtel. “While the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unsolved, we are thankful to finally have closure.”

Jeff was believed to have passed away on or shortly after his disappearance on April 29th, 2007. He would have turned 35 years old just last week– February 24th.

“We would like to thank everyone for all your support throughout the years.”

Jeff’s parents created the “Help Find Jeff Surtel” Facebook group only months after he went missing.

A memorial service will be held for family and friends at a later date, possibly next month.
