Chilliwack teenager who ran for SD33 by-election not done with politics
CHILLIWACK — Shane Kooyman, the 18-year-old who finished third in last Saturday’s by-election to fill a vacancy on the Chilliwack school board, might not be done with municipal politics.
Kooyman, who garnered 94 votes out of 7,238 votes cast in what was likely a very disappointing outcome for him, wrote in a social media post this past week that he may run again.
“As an 18-year old running for office for the first time, this experience has been an incredible learning opportunity,” said Kooyman, a grade 12 student in Chilliwack. “I’ve gained valuable insights and skills that will help me be even better prepared and more mature next time. October 2026 (winking emoji).”
October 2026 is when the next municipal election will be held in Chilliwack for council, school board, Cultus Lake Park Board and Fraser Valley Regional District.
