CHILLIWACK — WorkSafeBC, an independent provincial agency committed to promoting safe and health workplaces across British Columbia, has levied an administrative penalty against a Chilliwack farm, Shoker Farms Ltd., for unsafe occupational practices.

According to the text of a penalty on its website, WorkSafeBC inspected the company’s worksite and witnessed two workers on the 4:12 sloped roof of a warehouse. The agency says no fall protection was in place at the time, thereby exposing the workers to a fall risk greater than 4.9 meters, or 16 feet. WorkSafeBC says the company failed to ensure fall protection was used, a high-risk violation.

The date of the administrative penalty is January 21, 2025. The penalty was $2,832.15.

WorkSafeBC states on its website that administrative penalties are fines imposed on employers for health and safety violations of the Workers Compensation Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, and/or orders of WorkSafeBC, and for failure to take sufficient precautions to prevent workplace injuries or illnesses. Penalties are published as a deterrent and to spotlight the importance of making workplaces safe.
