CHILLIWACK — Loblaw announced Thursday (Feb. 20) that it has expanded its body-worn camera pilot program to two retail stores in Chilliwack.

In a statement from the company, Loblaw says employees at Real Canadian Superstore on Luckakuck Way and Shoppers Drug Mart at Southgate Shopping Centre on Yale Road will begin wearing the cameras to improve safety and address retail crime, effective Wednesday, February 19.

“This initiative is designed to help create a more secure environment for both our customers and colleagues,” the company wrote in a news release sent to Fraser Valley Today. “We believe this initiative will further improve safety and help de-escalate potentially violent situations.”

The extension of the pilot program to Chilliwack builds on what the company calls “early signs of success of the initial pilot program” and will be implemented in stores across British Columbia, Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan to assist in evaluating the effectiveness of body-worn cameras on increasing safety of colleagues and customers.

“The safety of our customers, colleagues, and stores remains our priority,” said Dean Henrico, Senior Vice President, Asset Protection. “Our expansion to Chilliwack highlights our ongoing commitment to evaluate measures that help create a safer shopping environment for all.” Retailers across Canada have faced growing challenges in recent years, including a notable rise in violent incidents. The decision to expand the use of body-worn cameras is part of Loblaw’s larger strategy to address these issues head-on, prioritizing safety for customers, colleagues, and the local communities they serve.”

Loblaw describes itself as Canada’s food and pharmacy leader and the nation’s largest retailer, selling grocery, pharmacy, health and beauty, apparel, general merchandise, financial services and wireless mobile products and services. With more than 2,500 corporate franchised and associate-owned locations, Loblaw, its franchisees and associate-owners employ more than 220,000 full- and part-time employees, making it one of Canada’s largest private sector employers.
