City of Mission to consider allowing shipping containers in residential areas

MISSION — The City of Mission is soliciting feedback from its constituents as it considers allowing shipping containers for the use of enclosed storage within residential zones in the community.

According to a statement from the municipality Wednesday (Feb. 19), the city says it’s eager to hear from as many residents in different neighbourhoods within the community about shipping containers.

“We know that people have very different opinions on the utility of shipping containers as storage places,” said Mayor Paul Horn. “In some of our neighborhoods, they will present a ready solution to storage needs, but in others, they will simply not be a good fit. We would like to hear from people across all neighbourhoods as we move forward with considering policy changes in this area. Your input will help us to determine where shipping containers can be situated and how they could be used in a way that minimizes adverse impacts on neighbours.”

Residents are invited to offer their input on the following:

  • Which residential zones should permit shipping containers for storage.
  • How many containers should be allowed per property.
  • Aesthetic considerations, such as appearance and placement.
  • Any other ideas or concerns you may have.

“Your feedback is valuable and will play a key role in shaping future regulations. The purpose of this survey is to gather community feedback on shipping containers in residential zones to present to Council at a future Council meeting,” the city said.

Residents are invited to weigh in at engage.mission.ca until Sunday, March 9.
