“Once RVs or vehicles become abandoned it doesn’t take very long before they get vandalized and burnt,” Aikenhead wrote in his email. “My main concern with this particular RV was that it was right underneath all the hydro and communications lines for everyone east of Slesse Creek. In regards to the communication lines, this cut off any emergency services to the Hatchery, Larson’s Holdings and roughly 70 – 80 people at Post Creek.”

There are also adverse environmental impacts from these encampments that impact what Aikenhead calls an environmentally sensitive river nearby, saying the fire produced toxic ash.

“All these encampments are unlawful,” Aikenhead said, adding that there are 19 RVs at 27 homeless camps east of the Vedder Bridge in the Chilliwack River Valley. “Why are unlawful encampments allowed to endanger roughly 100 law-abiding citizens? Post Creek is roughly 45 kms up Chilliwack Lake Road and already a long way from any emergency services. This particular case cut them off for 24 hours from any police, ambulance and fire help. Again why is illegal activity allowed to negatively affect and endanger law abiding citizens and the environment?”

The abandoned fifth wheel now has yellow tape strung around it, but it’s anyone’s guess how long it will sit there due to inaction from authorities.
