CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP says a man who was apprehended under the Mental Health Act following a police incident Friday night in Chilliwack had outstanding warrants.

According to a statement from Upper Fraser Valley RCMP spokesperson Corporal Teresa Parsons, Chilliwack RCMP members responded to a check well-being for a man living alone Friday night. Police say attempts to speak with the man were unsuccessful. Due to a concern for his safety and that of the public and police officers responding, the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team was called out to assist.

Police say neighbours in the area were asked to remain in their homes during the incident. After a short negotiation, the man exited the home and was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. No one was injured in the incident.

The man had outstanding warrants for his arrest at the time and is being held in custody.

Nearby Promontory residents reported hearing flash bangs, loud sirens, a bull horn and a police dog during the incident.

The incident wrapped up just before 10 p.m. Rosamond told Fraser Valley Today. She shared a picture at approximately 9:55 p.m. showing ERT personnel walking away from the scene toward their vehicles.

“It’s all wrapped up; they are leaving,” Rosamond said.
