LOWER MAINLAND — Mounties in Burnaby say two women from the Fraser Valley have been arrested after they allegedly stole a catalytic converter from a van but were later apprehended by police.

According to a statement from Burnaby RCMP Corporal Mike Kalanj, Burnaby RCMP frontline officers received a report of two suspects underneath a van in the parking lot near Brighton Avenue and Lougheed Highway on Wednesday, January 22 at about 4:30 a.m. Police say the suspects fled the scene with the vehicle’s catalytic converter before police arrived. The reporting party provided RCMP members with enough information about a description of their vehicle.

Cpl. Kalanj says patrols in the vicinity were successful as the two suspects were located and subsequently arrested with several catalytic converters and tools in their possession.

“While we have seen the number of catalytic converter thefts dropping in Burnaby, this incident is a reminder that these types of thefts are still happening in our community,” said Cpl. Kalanj. “We would like to acknowledge the witness who saw suspicious activity and called police right away.”
