UPDATE 11:21 A.M. MONDAY: The Lower Mainland District of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says traffic is flowing again after earlier traffic tie-ups caused by semis. Winter driving conditions are in effect. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is asking motorists to drive to conditions and ensure vehicles are equipped with winter tires and chains if travelling today.

Original story from 11:04 a.m. Monday:

CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the BC Highway Patrol is urging motorists to delay unnecessary travel on Highway 1 through Langley and the Fraser Valley due to wintery conditions that have led to intermittent shutdowns Monday morning (Feb. 3).

According to a statement from BCHP spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, motorists using Highway 1 need to be aware of icy, treacherous conditions that have produced temporary closures in order to make the highway safe for travel.

“The first reports came from the area between 216 and 264, but the icy conditions could affect anywhere along Highway #1 from Whistler to Hope,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “Drivers should not use Highway #1 unless necessary, they leave extra travel time, and their vehicles are fully prepared for winter conditions.”

Motorists are encouraged to check DriveBC for the most up-to-date road conditions.

Earlier in the morning at about 8:41 a.m., eastbound Highway 1 was blocked around 232 Street due to a vehicle incident in the centre lane. Crews attended the scene and motorists were advised to expect lengthy delays.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, Google Maps is showing dark red, or extensive traffic backups, through Langley.

The Lower Mainland District of the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure posted online at 9:43 a.m. that several semis were having challenges navigating the grade travelling eastbound on Highway 1. MOTI said multiple heavy wrecker tow trucks attended the scene to assist semis up the hill.
