UPDATE 10:05 A.M. MONDAY: Kent Harrison Search and Rescue says it was paged at about 12:50 p.m. Sunday after a hiker suffered a head injury on Bear Mountain, north of Agassiz. A team requested transportation from Valley Helicopters and a landing zone was set up at Harrison Hot Springs Elementary School. A first aid team was flown to the helicopter pad and hiked to the injured hiker near the summit of Bear Mountain. KHSAR says the subject was able to be walked with help to the helipad and flown down to a waiting ambulance, adding that the subject and their group did everything right by calling for help promptly, staying put in one location and having many warm layers and an emergency bivvy on hand to stay warm while awaiting rescue from first responders.

Original story below from 6:51 a.m. Monday morning:

AGASSIZ — A spokesperson for the Provincial Health Services Authority says a hiker suffered injuries following a fall near Bear Mountain north of Agassiz Sunday, resulting in a helicopter transport from search and rescue crews.

According to a statement from Joshua Grant, PHSA spokesperson, first responders were advised shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 26) that a hiker was injured while hiking at Bear Mountain. Grant said search and rescue crews transported the patient by helicopter to Harrison Hot Springs Elementary School, the site of a landing zone Sunday afternoon. A ground ambulance was waiting at the school to transport the injured hiker to hospital.

“The hiker had a fall, and search and rescue crews got them off the mountain,” Grant said. “We were there with a ground ambulance.”

Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department crews were paged at approximately 2:15 p.m. to assist with a landing zone at HHS Elementary School, 501 Hot Springs Road.

The injury is not believed to be serious, but the patient was left in care of B.C. EHS paramedics.

Firefighters notified dispatch at about 2:53 p.m. Sunday that the patient had been left in care with paramedics, command was terminated and all HHSFD units were heading back to headquarters.
