Update 2 p.m. Tuesday: Chilliwack Fire Chief Andrew Brown says eight firefighters from Hall 4 (South Sumas) were dispatched at approximately 6:15 p.m. to extinguish what it called a “burning complaint” in the 46000 block of Chilliwack Lake Road.

Original story below:

CHILLIWACK — Promontory resident Rob Silver-Fox says he’s witnessed a number of fires along Chilliwack Lake Road the past month or so, one of which he captured from his phone Monday night, in an area usually inhabited by unhoused residents.

Silver-Fox called in the latest fire to emergency dispatch Monday night (Jan. 20) after seeing it from the family room window of his residence on Bridle Ridge Crescent in Promontory. He says the fire happened about mid-way across the river flood plain, in close proximity to the Bridle Ridge trail parking lot.

“I live on Bridle Ridge Crescent and overlook the valley. I have seen 4 fires in the valley in the past month or so,” Silver-Fox said. “It’s a massive mess. The homeless people have now cut the locks off of the gate near the Bridlewood Event Centre and someone is driving a vehicle in there at all hours, too. The jewel of the valley is being destroyed by this activity.”

Chilliwack Fire Department’s Air Support unit responded to the scene and drafted water from the river with gas pumps to help extinguish the fire.
