CHILLIWACK —A quaint restaurant on Airport Road in Chilliwack that carried both homemade Ukrainian food as well as an extensive menu selection of breakfast, lunch and deli offerings will be marking the end of an era this coming week.

After 27 years of serving customers and creating memories for many local residents and Ukrainians alike, Sherry Kassian, owner of Sherry’s Carpathian Kitchen, says she has sold her business at 3-45835 Airport Road and will be hanging up her apron for good.

“When I moved to Chilliwack from Manitoba in 1990, one thing I found was there was no Ukrainian restaurant here,” said Kassian. “So in 1998, I decided to open and bring back some memories to many Ukrainians.”

On her website, Kassian said Ukrainian food is characterized by giving. By opening a restaurant, she sought to preserve her heritage and paid homage to her parents through the restaurant.

“I want to thank my father for instilling in me the strength of my heritage,” Kassian wrote on her website. “He taught me what it meant to share with others. But it is my mother’s gift of sharing her recipes and showing how to prepare the food, that has allowed me to share something of my culture with you.”

Kassian says she will cherish the many connections she made since her business opened. She maintained a family tradition by using recipes from her mom and grandmother and sharing them with her loyal customers, the people she will miss the most.

“I will miss my customers for sure, many who I made friends with,” Kassian said. “I saw their kids grow up and have kids of their own.”

Her last day making Ukrainian breakfasts, Ukrainian omelettes, or other delicacies like Babushka’s Platter will be this Friday, January 24. The business will be rebranded offering different food from the current restaurant.

“The new owner will make his restaurant his own but not Ukrainian,” Kassian said. “So, that legacy will be gone from Chilliwack. I’m looking forward to the new chapter in my life. A huge thank you to all my customers who made all of this possible for me throughout the 27 years.”
