MISSION — Correctional Service Canada says an inmate at Mission Institution died last week while in custody.

CSC says the 33-year-old inmate has been identified as Tyler Damien Van Basten, who had been serving a prison term of three years, 11 months and 18 days since January 29, 2024.

Van Basten’s next of kin have been notified about his passing.

Published media reports suggest Van Basten’s sentence involved possession for the purpose of trafficking.

As with all cases surrounding the death of an inmate, CSC says it will review the circumstances around Van Basten’s passing. CSC policy requires that local police and the coroner be notified.

A GoFundMe has been set up in Van Basten’s name by Rebecca Ladouceur from Chilliwack.

“I am starting this Go Fund Me to help out an amazing family,” Ladouceur wrote. “They have lost someone very important to them and Tyler touched many lives. Anything you can do whether it be a few dollars, or sharing the go fund me, would be appreciated.”

As of Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe had generated $650 from six donors.
