IIO to investigate after woman injured while taken into police custody in Chilliwack
CHILLIWACK — The BC RCMP has referred an incident that occurred in Chilliwack early Saturday and involved a seriously injured woman to the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO).
The incident occurred early on November 23, when officers responded to a report from local restaurant staff about an allegedly impaired woman refusing to take a cab and entering her vehicle. The restaurant was not identified in the RCMP news release however a separate news release from IIO states the incident occurred at a bar on Gaetz Street.
According to police, officers arrived at the scene at approximately 2:30 a.m. and found the car running with the woman in the driver’s seat. The woman initially exited the vehicle but then attempted to re-enter it. Officers intervened, and the situation escalated, leading to the woman being taken into custody.
Emergency Health Services transported the woman to the hospital, where it was determined she had sustained a serious injury. According to the IIO, hospital officials determined that the woman would require surgery.
